Starting Out

Now for the work stuff.

In our last class we worked on finding a print resource on our chosen topics, which would be one of our five required citations. As I was searching, I realised that I might have difficulty finding a print resource on my topic, as I'm unsure of whether or not M. Night Shyamalan has written a book or been written about. I'm going to see if I can dig up a magazine article featuring him.

Anyway, using the good old general knowledge enhancer Wikipedia, I looked him up and to my surprise I found that there had in fact been a book written about M. Night Shyamalan : The Man Who Heard Voices. Looking at the information on this book it appears to be about Shyamalan's movie making process for his film "Lady in the Water" rather than about him in general. The book deatails the processes that went on before and during the making of the film, focusing on the troubles along the way; Shyamalan's falling out with Disney, problems with casting actors, script re-writes and attempts to provide a look into Shyamalan's decisions and thought processes.

Reading the reviews of this book I was surprised to find out that the author of this book, Michael Bamberger, is a sports journalist, which I found quite strange. Another thing I noted while reading the reviews was that many people consider this book a bad representation of M. Night Shyamalan, even though it provides insights into the process of making a film. I probably wouldn't trust this book as a source of information if I really wanted to read about M. Night Shyamalan as it appears to consist more of biased interpretations and observations of an author, than thoughts and opinions of the person it's supposed to be about.
